L.A.bor Day weekend!
Woo, [info]cerambicydae and I went to visit [info]stutefish and [info]limeodor/[info]lemonodor and got to meet Petunia and Mr. Shrimp.

I did not miss Harveyfest in the least. I think L.A. is just like Burning Man, except it's hotter, has nicer toilets, and the Guinness is cold.

It has super-cool places to hang 24/7 like BCD Tofu and Bigfoot Lodge. We also ate yummy dim sum, yummy cuban food, awesome brunches, and the most amazing pastrami sandwich ever.

Sadly, Hollywood Hellhouse was sold out before we got to the front of the line, but we did get to party with their Christian Youth Group.

I saw lots of cool cool things foremost being my very first visit to my future home The Museum of Jurassic Technology.

At LACMA, we played in a great interactive nanotechnology exhibit, we saw cool netsuke, the tar pits, and some awesome 20th century post-abstract art like "Central Meridian" by Michael McMillen.

We also saw The Picture of Everything.

And I also saw Bodyworlds which is the most impressive, well-executed, educational, and artful exhibit on human physiology and anatomy I have ever seen. And this is a subject in which I have a bit of interest and training.

We saw "Garden State" which I thought was pretty stupid, punctuated with occasional cleverness. I guess some people read Utne Reader's issue on the "quarter-life" crisis and actually took it seriously. "Whoa, dude, when you like hit 25 you realize that life is totally like this INFINITE ABYSS." And Wynona was way cuter than Natalie Portman, though Zach Graff has MUCH bigger lips than Ethan Hawke.

But the Arclight theatre was awe-inspiring. It is like a cathedral to cinema. I felt like I was going to Mass.

We also watched "Bubba Ho-Tep" on DVD, which was completely not what I expected, but really awesome. Bruce Campbell. Rock.

Hilarious story - going through security check at Oakland airport, some nebbish in front of us drops his keys into the little plastic tray and sends it through the scanner. The keychain has a mini-Leatherman on it. Ya know, the kind that folds out into a KNIFE. On the other side, he is totally surprised and stricken that they are going to take this thing away from him along with THE SCISSORS IN HIS CARRY-ON BAG. Seriously, has this guy not flown on an airplane since 2000? I wanted to slap in in the back of the head, but it looked like his buddy was going to beat me to it. At least he didn't hold US up at all.

Not a lot of souvenirs other than a LACMA bumper sticker "Think about honking if you (heart) conceptual art." and my new FUZZY MONKEYHEAD WALLET!

Overall, the best single moment was just cruising around at night in John's 1965 Chrysler 300 with hip-hop playing on the stereo. It exactly matched my vision of an LA night on the town. I felt so totally hip, I wore my Birkenstocks without socks the rest of the weekend!

Thank you, Lori and John for a great weekend. They are the best hosts ever!

And thanks to [info]veritatem for dependably keeping our kitty fed and loved while we were away.

You are welcome, please to come any, any time.

Here's the tank that I was reminded of by the sticker you pointed out in the men's room of Ocean Star:
